on top of the world

Mel Pullen wrote this.

As I write this it is 01:20 and it is daylight.

It is overcast and drizzling, so I had to borrow a brolly from the hotel. Yet it is daylight and this is the darkest it will get.

I’m in Tromso , which is my ultimate destination on this holiday. I’ve been here just six hours and I have three days in total here. I already feel I’m going to come back here.

Everyone is friendly and they don’t mind that you don’t speak their language.

The scenery is staggering and there are a number of extremes in this place that is 70 degrees north of the equator.

The worlds most northernly brewery is here. It’s also got the worlds most northerly university and cathedral.

Naturally the sun doesn’t set here for a few more weeks.

I wanted to find a bar to try the local brew and most of the town centre bars were quite crowded. When I first arrived, I walked around for a while and found what looked like a typical student bar. When I went in, around 11:30 tonight, I was staggered.

It felt like one of the trendiest bars I have been in for a while (I must get out more often). The music was chosen by the bar staff. On vinyl. They knew their music and had a huge record collection.

No wonder Tromso is called the Paris of the north . They are cultured, intellectual even.

I was told that the midnight sun energises people. Walking back to my hotel a few minutes ago I saw many people walking around, cars driving and bars still open. This is a Sunday night.

Although it isn’t night. It’s day.
